My name is David McKinney and I am the principal of Havana High School. I taught for 20 years, teaching multiple subjects at different grade levels. As an educator, I was awarded the most inspirational teacher of Havana High School in 2013 and was awarded the most inspirational teacher from Western Illinois University in 2010, 2011, and 2013 school year. I retired from the National Guard June 28, 2011 where I developed a multitude of leadership skills, serving 24 years in the military. I have deployed 3 times since 9-11 and I served as a field grade officer in the last two deployments with a plethora of responsibilities. I have led and been a member of multiple staffs. I have developed and initiated large scale projects. I have worked with multiple organizations from several countries. I have mentored, coached and evaluate several soldiers in my career.
I have my Bachelor of Science degree from Eastern IL University and a Master of Science in Education Leadership from Western IL University. I am a graduate of the Infantry Officer Basic Course, Infantry Officer Advance Course, Military Police Officer Advance Course (Phase I), Company Commanders Course, Combined Arms and Service Staff School, and Intermediate Level Education - Common Core (Command General and Staff College).
I am a firm believer we have five goals as educators for the young students we train. We must aid students to reach their potential, produce graduates, good citizens, productive tax payers and have as many students as possible meet or exceed state standards. I set the bar high and am very consistent. I follow the teacher and student handbook precisely as the board has approved it.
My wife, son and I are residents of Canton. I am fortunate to be married to the best friend I have ever had in my life. She works in the Human Resource Field as Human Resource Director at SC2 Incorporated and has her PHR. I have a daughter who is an RN and works as a workers compensation nurse for a corporation. She got married in the Summer of 2012 to an excellent young man, who is an engineer. I have three grandchildren from my daughter. I have a son who graduated from Western IL University. He was on scholarship for track and was the captain of the cross country team. He majored in Law Enforcement and is a former high school state champion in wrestling. He is the most decorated athlete in the history of Canton High School. He is a prison guard at Western Illinois Correctional Center in Mount Sterling, Illinois. I have another son, a former All Area Football Player, that is also prison guard at Western Illinois Correction Center. Our third son was a two time junior high state champion in wrestling and has the state record for the most points scored in a championship match. He also was a state high school champion and has the record for the quickest pin at state for 160 lbs. He was awarded wrestler of the year for the Springfield area in 2017. He was also an All conference football player. He graduated Lincoln College with a Criminal Justice degree. He was on a wrestling and baseball scholarship. He currently is serving in the Army with the 101st Division. He got married in summer of 2022.
We were a sports minded family. My children have had 20 state appearances. God has blessed me with a peaceful home and a wonderful family. I feel fortunate to be working in a field I truly enjoy. I love being involved the youth and molding their futures. I enjoy constantly learning and improving the skills of my profession. Thank you for entrusting me with this huge responsibility. I will try my best to exceed your expectations and not let you down.
